Whiter Teeth, Naturally

So today I am going to appeal to your vanity…and your reason

My teeth and I have been adversaries for years. Diagnosed with advanced periodontal disease at 26 and not having much hope of things getting any better, short of pulling all of them out and getting dentures, I wasn’t faced with any promising options. I was told I could get a major scraping of the roots of my teeth to try to help save my teeth from further damage but since they only do one side at a time there is a chance of getting re-infected before the other side is done. I’ll pass on that! I had grown to live with the constant aching in my gums, the broken teeth as well as their yellowish tinge since whitening products just made them more sensitive, but only being in my early thirties I didn’t really want dentures either. Then I found oil pulling, and I am not longer at odds with my mouth.

Maybe you do not have dental problems like I did, so below I have listed some ingredients found in whitening toothpastes and whitening strips or gel. ( all info comes from thegoodguide.com). I believe anytime we can substitute chemical laden products with all natural alternatives we are doing wonders for our health.

Triclosan raises a high level of health concern and is of regulatory concern because:

  • This ingredient (or its metabolites) is frequently detected in human blood or urine, indicating significant U.S. population exposure.
  • This ingredient is suspected of causing skin or sense organ toxicity, according to sources compiled by Scorecard (www.scorecard.org)
  • This ingredient is suspected of causing immunotoxicity, according to sources compiled by Scorecard (www.scorecard.org)

silica raises a medium level of health concern because:

Triethanolamine raises a medium level of health concern because:

Propylene Glycol raises a medium level of health concern because:

Carrageenan raises a low level of health concern because:

  • This ingredient is suspected of causing cancer, according to sources compiled by Scorecard (www.scorecard.org)

I really like that the ingredient suspected of causing cancer is only classified as a “low level” health concern, really?!! My point is not to convince you of my opinion, but to give you accurate information so you can form your own. What is in your toothpaste or whitening strips? Any of the above ingredients? Ready to find out how you can get whiter teeth naturally?

Sunflowerseed oil

Directions for Oil Pulling:

  • Take 1 Tbsp. oil (sesame or sunflower;unrefined, organic, and expellor-pressed or cold-pressed)
  • Gently swish in mouth (as you would mouthwash) for 15-20 minutes
  • Spit out oil (If it has become thicker and white, you have done it correctly)
  • Rinse mouth with warm salt water
  • Brush teeth with an all natural toothpaste ( click here for my all natural toothpaste recipe)

Additional tips:

  • If you have an allergy to sesame or sunflower oil try coconut oil (just make sure it is in liquid form first)
  • Always do your oil pulling on an empty stomach, I do mine first thing in the morning before I eat, but if you want to do it later in the day, just make sure you wait 4 hours after meals and 1 hour after drinking anything.
  • You can eat immediately following oil pulling
  • I saw results right away, but continue to do it daily for at least a week or two to really give it a chance to start working

According to oilpulling.com, the most obvious result of oil pulling is improved dental health. Teeth become whiter, gums pinker and healthier looking, and breath fresher. That alone makes it worthwhile. What is really remarkable is that the health benefits don’t stop there. Many health problems, including those which medical science has yet to find cures for, are also improved or completely cured. Oil pulling has the potential to help with just about any illness or chronic condition.

Below is a list of some of the most common conditions people have reported that respond to oil pulling:

Results of Oil pulling Survey  by a news paper in India:
In 1996, after continuous publication of a regular column for three years in their Sunday edition on oil pulling, Andhra Jyoti, a Telugu daily news paper writer, conducted a survey to find out the types of diseases cured and the effectiveness of oil pulling. Out of a total of 1041 respondents, 927 (89%) reported cure of one or more diseases. People who did not report any cure were 114(11%).

The analysis indicated cure of the following types of chronic diseases by oil pulling:
