This Jack-O-Lantern cocktail recipe is a scream.

Everyone likes to imbibe a bit come Halloween. We don’t blame you. After all, it is the night where witches, goblins, and ghosts of all kind come out to raise hell. To protect your nerves from all those loud screams and creepy faces, we’ve found the ultimate Halloween cocktail for you to serve at your party.

Now, you may think a pumpkin-themed cocktail has to contain pumpkin. Not so! You can easily make a pumpkin cocktail out of anything that’s orange. And yes, that includes oranges.

The Jack-O-Lantern Cocktail from ModCloth

The following cocktail actually looks like a pumpkin… seriously. The drink features a bright, orange base, an orange top, and a little, green leaf.

*Ingredients for the cocktail

2 oz. whiskey
4 oz. orange juice
1 oz. simple syrup (recipe below)
Mint leaves
Orange
Ice

Ingredients for the simple syrup

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
Handful of mint leaves, muddled
Zest from 1 orange

*Use organic ingredients whenever possible.

Method for cocktail

Pour the whiskey, orange juice, and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker. Add a few ice cubes and give the concoction a good stir. Strain the mixture into a lowball glass. Slice the orange into wheels (not wedges) and cut a small slit into the center. Insert a mint leaf to make a “pumpkin top” with a stem. Place the orange wheel on top of the cocktail as garnish.

Method for simple syrup

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and slowly bring the mixture to a boil. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Remove the syrup from heat and let it cool. You can store the remaining mixture in the refrigerator for up to a month. (Good luck making it last that long.)

If you have an extra orange after everything is mixed, we suggest carving a Jack-O’-Lantern face. Sure, you may not be used to craving an orange, but it’s really just as simple as carving a pumpkin. (Also: It’s a heck of a lot less messy.)

Just slice the top off the orange, remove the fruit, and then hollow out the body of the orange. Gently slice a little pumpkin face into the orange and serve alongside your cocktails.

Have a happy Halloween!
