Commercial toothpaste has really started to scare me, not in the “there is a flesh-eating zombie chasing me”, kind of way, but more in the “oh my, I’ve been putting that in my mouth?!” kind of way. When both of my sons were diagnosed with sensory integration dysfunction, I decided I was going to integrate as many natural products into our lives as possible, since I truly believe all the chemical-exposure we are subjected to daily, puts undue stress on our bodies natural functioning. So I started looking at all the chemicals in the products I was using on a daily basis, and wow, there were a lot of chemicals that I never realized were in these common products, even toothpaste, and since The Physicians Desk Reference states, the mucosal lining inside your mouth has an absorption efficiency of over 90%, this means carcinogens and other chemicals can get into your blood, your brain, and your cells. According to downwithbasics.com the 5 scariest ingredients are :
Soduim –Flouride– did you know that sodium fluoride is also a main ingredient in rat & roach poison? Fluoride has NEVER been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and to add insult to injury, a 1990 study stated that fluoride has been shown to NOT reduce cavities and scientists are now linking fluoride to dental deformity, arthritis, allergic reactions and about 10,000 unnecessary deaths each year from cancer. (From “Fluoride an equivocal carcinogen. National Cancer Institute). Fluoride can also kill you if you ingest too much of it or it can cause problems with your bones.
FD & C Blue Dye # 1 & 2- Recent studies suggest that these dyes may trigger health, behavior, and learning problems.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate– We will talk about this cosmetic powerhouse further in later posts, but just consider that the American College of Toxicity has found it to be corrosive and harmful to skin tissue.
Triclosan– It is used in toothpaste for its’ antibacterial properties, but is classified with the EPA as a dangerous pesticide
Hydrated Silica- Is used as an abrasive and is made from crystallized compounds found in quartz, sand and flint. Excessive use may cause breakdown of tooth enamel.
I don’t want any of those things in my mouth let alone my bloodstream so I did some research and found really good info. on the internet about making your own toothpaste, the original recipe I used is found here. While I love Dr. Bonner’s soap for a lot of things I don’t want it in my mouth so I came up with the recipe that follows and it works out great for my family and I, hope you like it!
Here is everything you need:
Ingredients:
5-6 Tbsp. Coconut oil (look for organic, virgin, unrefined, expeller pressed oil, I used Spectrum brand)
5 Tbsp. Baking soda
1/2 Tbsp. salt (I used sea salt)
10 drops stevia (I used sweet leaf brand)
10 drops wild orange essential oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
5 drops melaleuca also known as tea tree (Sometimes the taste of tea tree can be overwhelming, but if you like the taste feel free to use more)
Mix everything together in a small bowl. It should look something like this:
You will notice it is still pretty thin, if so, add a little more baking soda and pop it in the fridge for 10 minutes.
When you pull it out of the fridge it should be fairly thick and look similar to this
Now put it in a sterilized jar (I used an old baby food jar I had on hand), label it and your done!
Some additional tips…
- When you have got it the jar, if you would like it to set up more, put it back in the fridge for 10-20 minutes
- It doesn’t need to be refrigerated, but if it is really warm in your house, it will soften up so put it in the fridge to firm it back up.
- I scoop it out with a clean Q-tip so to avoid contamination
- If you find it slides off your toothbrush, rub it on your teeth with the Q-tip and then brush
- Enjoy!!
I hope you like the recipe, if you have any questions, additions to the recipe, or you have tried it, let me know, leave a comment!! I will be sharing more of my natural recipes in up-coming posts so stay-tuned!

Your welcome 🙂 Let me know how you like it once you try it, it’s all natural and you can get the ingredients fairly cheap, especially if you already have essential oils, without counting the cost of the essential oils, you can get the ingredients for around $10 and you will have plenty to make numerous batches.

Can’t wait to try it! When I attempted a toothpaste recipe, it was a bit too coarse for my mouth, but it made a great, gentle exfoliant for my skin!
