We have some bad news about fish.

Do you know what’s in your healthy fish meal? Probably not, and that’s definitely not for the best. While there are plenty of fish distributors that are diligent about catching and selling fresh and healthy fish, there are others that, well, just can’t be trusted. We wanted to give you a quick reminder about what creepy, crawly things could be lurking in your fish.

In June this year, a couple in Arizona was shocked to find worms in their just-bought salmon. The fish came from a local store. You may think this isn’t a common thing that happens, but actually, it is. According to a recent Munchies article, parasites reside in almost every type of fish. This squirmy information comes from a “top fish purveyor” from Portland. ” ‘What I provide is as fresh as can be. It comes straight from the ocean to the restaurant. I don’t eat raw fish because of what I’ve seen,’ admitted the fish purveyor, who sells to many of the city’s top restaurants. ‘I don’t eat sushi anymore,’ ” reports Vice.

And that leads us to another thing that’s f’d up about fish.

In late July, 62 “people from eleven states across the nation have been hospitalized due to Salmonella poisoning. The number of ill people reported from each state is as follows: Arizona (11), California (34), Illinois (1), Michigan (1), Minnesota (4), Mississippi (1), New Mexico (6), South Dakota (1), Virginia (1), Washington (1), and Wisconsin (1),” reports the Marler Blog. Where was the Salmonella residing? In sushi.

“Osamu Corporation, a distributor of raw, frozen tuna, announced two voluntary recalls of yellowfin tuna on July 21, originating from one processing plant in Indonesia. Laboratory findings indicated that the yellowfin was the likely source of the sixty-two reported infections,” Marler states.

The blog address the fact that most Salmonella infections occur “when food from infected animals is consumed.” But infections also can happen when “food is contaminated by animal or human feces.”

Gross.

So, the moral is: research where you buy your fish from, and cook it very, very thoroughly.
