7 Tricks to Get Rid of Dark Circles Under Your Eyes

One of the most annoying beauty issues—right up there with chipped nail polish and smudged eyeliner—is dark under eye circles. They make you look tired even when you’re not, older (gasp!), and if you don’t have the right concealer… well, orange. Luckily, with a little effort and a few lifestyle tweaks, you can get rid of dark circles without having to resort to fancy shmancy cosmetic procedures.

Here are 7 easy ways to get rid of dark circles and keep them from coming back:

1. Don’t wash your face with hot water

Word is doing so makes puffy eyes worse, which in turn highlights your dark circles. Oh. Goody.

2. Always wear sunscreen

Because the skin under your eyes is so thin, it’s uber-prone to sun-induced hyperpigmentation (cue sad trombone). Wear sunscreen on the regular, applying it right up to your lower lash line—just make sure it’s made specifically for your face or eyes to prevent potential irritation. For extra protection, invest in a pair of large sunglasses.

3. Hydrate

Drinking your daily quota of water helps promote proper blood circulation around the eyes, which means no longer looking like a raccoon. For even healthier skin, use a gentle cleaner that keeps your face moisturized and doesn’t dry it out.

4. Avoid rubbing your eyes

The friction from rubbing your eyes can cause your skin to darken, so if you’re particularly aggressive with removing your eye makeup, this one change could make all the difference. Use a facial cleansing oil to remove your makeup, which helps “melt” eye makeup with the least amount of scrubbing.

5. Use an eyelash curler

Using an eyelash curler takes care of two issues: It gets rid of the shadow your lower lashes cast on your under eye area, and opens your eyes, making you look more awake.

6. Use almond oil

Almond oil can help lighten the skin and reduce dullness, and is a popular partner in crime to get rid of dark circles. Simply apply around your eyes and leave it on overnight. The next morning, gently wash it off and get ready to rock another day.

7. Use a retinol

If you press on your dark circles and they get lighter, that means you’re probably dealing with blood vessels showing through your skin. (It’s one of those super fun side effects of aging.) Apply a retinol cream under your eyes every night to help plump your skin and build collagen. The thicker your skin, the less visible your blood vessels will be.
