YUCK! Ever wonder what’s really hiding in your food? Ever thought to yourself did I just eat that? Well what if you really knew what was hiding in the food that you eat everyday? Would you still eat your favorite foods knowing the marketing world and FDA has been keeping secrets from you? Keep reading if you really want to know what’s hiding in your shredded cheeses, jello, and even your tomatoes. Stop now if you have a weak stomach or think that “what you don’t know won’t kill you!”
Castoreum- Jamie Oliver (one of my favorite people) told the world about this ingredient. This mixture of beaver anal secretions and urine is most often found in cheap vanilla and strawberry ice cream and sometimes as a fragrance in cosmetics. Here’s the catch, the FDA says it’s safe to consume!
Gelatin- This is for all you vegetarians out there! Gelatin is boiled animal connective tissue. Found in jello, jams, yogurt, and frosted cereals. Makes you think the next time you’re sick and reaching for the jello!
Shellac- Yes Ladies! Shellac just like the shellac you get for your manicure to have that long-lasting shine and color stay is also found in all your hard-shelled candies from jelly beans to candy corn. Shellac comes from the female secretions of insect native to Thailand.
Ammonia- Just like your strong-smelling home cleaning agents. Ammonia is used as a wash to clean the “trimmings” on low-grade meats to get rid of bacteria. Most of the time this grade of ground meat is served in schools, fast food restaurants, and even grocery stores. It’s otherwise known as “pink slime.”
Cochineal beetles - These guys are being crushed to make red dye for yogurt, jams, even Starbucks frappuccino!
Sawdust- Otherwise known as cellulose. It’s used to prevent caking in shredded cheeses. The ones everyone looks forward to topping their favorite pizzas and pastas with.
Prozac - Guess who’s high anxiety now and needing prescription drugs?? Your chicken. Yep they’re giving chicken Prozac and other prescription drugs to calm them down so they don’t attack each other due to their close and stressful living conditions. Best way to avoid this is to buy organic. Regulations prohibit the use of antibiotics and other drugs.
The list is endless for what is being put into your food without you ever knowing these days. GMO‘s (genetically modified foods) plague our food, health, and lifestyle everyday. It’s not only in your junk food, processed, and meats. Scientists are changing the way our fruits and vegetables now grow. They’re adding flounder enzymes to tomatoes to help them grow in darker conditions and have a longer growing period and some of your favorite foods are being crossed with animals enzymes to help fight off disease and prevent them from spoiling. Learn to read labels and understand what you’re buying and consuming, eat more whole foods, and go organic as much as you can especially with animals byproducts and the dirty dozen.
